Eddie's Top Fives
Top five albums—hard pressed to think of 5 new albums I’ve bough this year
1. Ben Folds—songs for Silverman---hey I like ben folds—whats wrong with that?!
2. TFC-man-made—v good business as usual
3. Goldfrapp—Supernature-good as dancy as I can get
4. Van morrisson---Magic time---pretty good—why did we not have a public funeral for the death of ‘Foggy’little?
5. Morrissey at earls court---NOT very good
6. 050505-simple minds---no only joking, has anybody bought this?
Top 5 reissues-only 1 I know would count as a reissue in 2005
1. Bob Dylan no direction home—excellent---‘ I do not believe you---you are a LIAR’
Remaining favourite old albums I bought this year:
2. Kate bush-- Hounds of Love—not much screeching on this record. fave KB album AND contains a song about people making weather machines and then being abducted by the government—Brian, Im sure this has been a Doctor Who plot?
3. The Cult—Love—rockin’
4. Van Morrisson- Philospohers Stone—lots of good unreleased stuff and alternate takes great version of wonderful remark
Books
1. War and Peace--excellent
2. Simon schama’s history of Britain Vols 1-3—very subjective general history--- really good on history of reform movements/ideas so 2&3 best. good contrast with Cyril Falls history of ulster I read just before, which as you might guess, was not the most liberal book I’ve ever read!
3. Julian Barnes arthur and george. Juilian Barnes writing about conan Doyle? How could I not love it!
4. Clom toibin—the heather Blazing—slight but top stuff
5. Stuart Maconie Cider with roadies---indulgent tales from days when I bought NME every Thursday. Would also recommend Andrew Collin’s Where did it all go right?
Missed out TV:
Nothing stands out bar reality TV shows I like them.
What time is it? Its CHICO time!
Films
Rarely went to the cinema this year and generally can’t remember the names of the films we did see—was Vanity Fair released this year? If so it was a passable attempt at turning a wonderful book into a pop video. But still worth watching.
Did get an Alsitair Sim double DVD and a Will Hay box set this year. Top class!

John L's Top Fives
Beck - wonderful return to form
Gorrillaz - geniii
Magic Numbers try it. I think you would actually like it.
Goldfrapp Bless her and she looks like one of the three loves of my life
Arcade Fire
I still want to get the one by Charlotte Hatherly
and I recommend the new Cold Cuts album but I have only seen them live.
American Pastoral Philip Roth
Notes on a scandal Zoe Heller
The Plot Against American Philip Roth
What I loved Siri Huthvedt (only if in recovery period from having been in love with someone with severe mental health problems (OCD, Depression, borderline Psychopathic, split personality all in one rather beautiful head Oh dear)
Tender is the Night by F Scott Fitzgerald (likewise oh dear)
(next year read my book about it)
Reissues !
TV
Cassanov
Doctor Who But not religiously (my flatmate was dating him)
The documentary on people with OCD
The west wing where he’s ill and in a wheel chair but that is Im sure a repeat
Channel Four news
Flims
Sideways v. good.
I was forced to see Harry Potter the last one. It isn’t that bad but the superficiality of film is surely the appropriate medium rather than as reading matter for any adult
Bet I like Broken Flowers but haven’t seen it yet.
Garden State
The silly one with girls coming of age with unknowns in it. Is it after sunrise?

Daryn's Top Fives
Top 5 albums of 2005
Mercury Rev - Secret Migration - American pastoral removed slightly from the psychedelic
"outness" of previous outings, but suffers no less because of this
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning - not quite the new Dylan, but better than most
Bonnie 'Prince' Billy & Matt Sweeny - Superwolf - Chavez meets Palace on this set of sparse
songs honed live during 2004
Teenage Fanclub - ManMade - the greatest power pop band ever show why they're the best kept secret in the world
Super Furry Animals - Love Kraft - singalong choruses, phased guitars and the best performance on TOTP this year
Top 5 reissues of 2005
Morrissey - Live at Earls Court - a great document of a fantastic tour
Sonic Youth - Goo - now with added non major label hissy demos
John Coltrane/Thelonius Monk- Carnegie Hall - a second document of a five month link up
Bob Dylan - No direction home - , fuzzy
bass, Bloomfield's noodly guitars, demos, protest songs, Guthrie
The Fall - The Complete Peel Sessions - time to ditch those hissy c90s recorded in the 80s,
now for the pristine pile driving sound of the "Mighty Fall."
Top 5 films of 2005
Batman Begins - making all the right moves by referencing Frank Miller and Jeph Loeb's
darker interpretation of this character, the best one since 1989's Tim Burton debut (though
that's not exactly an achievement)
Cinderella Man - a great boxing film, engaging narrative, not too schmaltzy
A very long engagement - portraying the French attitude to their soldiers during the First
World War within the context of a story that weaves in elements of romance, war and the
detective story, beautiful to watch
No Direction Home - two masters collide and produce an engaging portrayal of both the time
and the "legend"
Sin City - another Frank Miller adaptation, surely the greatest comic genius (apart from
Alan Moore), where CGI showed how it can be used by a great director
Top 5 TV programmes
Ramsays Kitchen Nighmares - forever changes the way you view the food trade as Ramsay
uncovers a catalogue of ineptitude which delights the viewer but surely must frighten the
diner
Desperate Housewives - refreshing TV, easy to watch, good entertainment
The West Wing - a soap opera dressed up as serious drama, brilliant
Ashes Cricket - Channel 4 show why Sky's gain is our loss
Blackpool - referencing Dennis Potter's use of songs to crystallise the internal thoughts
etc of characters, fantastic fun
Top 5 books
Bret Easton Ellis - Lunar Park - a return to form after Glamorama, even a downloadable playlist to listen to while reading, his best yet
Nick Laird - To a Fault - Zadie Smith has good taste in ex lawyers turned poets and bad novelists
Johnny Rogan - Van Morrison - years in the making, can almost be forgiven for the severed alliance (sausage appliance)
Richard Yates - Collected short stories - American realist, flows of the page, perfectly weighted short stories
Paul Auster and David Mazzuchelli (art) - City of
glass - turning Paul Auster's "detective story" into a graphical novel offered a unique interpretation of this great novel
Mercury Rev - Secret Migration - American pastoral removed slightly from the psychedelic
"outness" of previous outings, but suffers no less because of this
Bright Eyes - I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning - not quite the new Dylan, but better than most
